Let me outline the key research priorities of the Korea Inequality Research Lab.
Despite being recognized as a successful example of "growth with equity" in the past, Korea has experienced rising inequality, shifting “from a model of shared growth to unshared growth” (book workshop 3) with "varieties of precarity" and “political polarization”(book session 2). Additionally, we seek to analyze the historical evolution of the East Asian inequality regime, using the concept of the “Rice Empire” (book session 1).
Measuring income inequality accurately is a difficult task. We are attempting to integrate the macro statistics of national accounts with the micro statistics of household income distribution using the methods of Distributional National Accounts (online session, September 3). Additionally, we are leading the way in utilizing administrative micro data on income and wealth (Panel 11).
We are particularly dedicated to studying social policies aimed at reducing inequality, which include gender equality (book workshop 1), tax policy (book workshop 2), and basic income (book workshop 4). With Korea facing challenges such as an extremely low fertility rate and the fastest aging population in the world, we will need to develop a new approach to social policy.
